Junior Mannies

Junior Mannies was a veteran basketball coach who served as the IBCA placement service director and Record Book editor for several years. He passed away in March 1983. Coach Mannies was a very popular figure in the history of the IBCA and loved working with coaches and helping them find jobs. Since 1983, as many as two scholarships have been awarded each year to a boy or a girl who is in some manner physically challenged but has overcome this adversity and has still contributed to their school’s basketball program. After compiling a career record of 309-301 in 29 seasons as a varsity coach at Gilead, Washington Township-Cass County, Delphi, Mississinewa, Lewis Cass and Elwood, Coach Mannies passed away at the age of 55 while serving as the Athletic Director at Danville High School.

Jack Schult

Jack Schult was varsity boys’ basketball coach at Lafayette Jefferson from 1977-79, compiling a 21-19 record over two seasons. He had been a boys’ basketball assistant at the school for the previous 14 seasons (1963-77), four under Marion Crawley and 10 under Joe Heath. Schult previously was an assistant coach in basketball and football at Lafayette Central Catholic in 1960-63.

He served as the IBCA’s job placement director from April 1983 until December 1983.

Schult is a 1956 graduate of Lafayette Jefferson and a 1963 graduate of Purdue University. At Lafayette Jefferson, he had been involved in coaching basketball, football, baseball and tennis prior to becoming the varsity basketball coach. He was an assistant for a boys’ basketball state champion in 1964, a football mythical state champion in 1967 and baseball state champions in 1969 and 1973. He was head coach for a boys’ tennis state champion in 1975 and boys’ tennis state runner-up in 1976.

He served as assistant athletic director at Lafayette Jefferson from 1980-98. He later was coordinator of special programs for the Lafayette School Corp. He was inducted into the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association in 1985 and into the Lafayette Jefferson Alumni Hall of Fame in 2013. He also was recognized by the Indiana Legislature for more than 50 years of service to the Lafayette community upon his retirement in 2017.

Of note, Schult had parts in two Indiana-set movies. He was the coach of the Oolitic team in “Hoosiers” in 1986, and he was a first-base coach for the Chicago White Sox in “Eight Men Out” in 1988.

Gene became the Job Placement Director in the Spring of 1984. Gene received a call from IBCA Executive Director Virgil Sweet asking him to become the new IBCA Job Placement Director. Gene’s first game as a varsity head coach had been against Coach Sweet and his Valpo team a few years earlier(Valpo 72-68 Rensselaer). Gene accepted the job because of his love of the game and of the people that worked so hard in the coaching profession.

Coached by HOF coach Phil Buck…4-year letterman for the Hornets. Scoring Avg. Soph-18.7, Jr. 24.5, and Sr. 31.0 ppg. Scored 40 as sophomore vs Frankfort in Sectional game. Scored 42 in double overtime win over Lebanon and Rick Mount and HOF Coach Jim Rosenstihl. (Mount was only a freshman, but scored 26 in the game) Rossville win over Lafayette Jeff, scored 31 vs. Hall of Fame Coach Marion Crawley (The Broncos avenged that regular season loss in the Regional Finals) …held the Rossville Career Scoring Record for 25 years (1641 points)…scored 40+ points 8 times in career…state’s leading scorer as a senior… Grades 10-11-12, All-Conference, All-Sectional, All-County & All-State as senior…Tough choice as a senior…offered full scholarship by both Purdue and Butler. Choice was even tougher because Coach Bob King (Purdue Ast. Coach, HOF Member, IBCA Exec. Director) recruited Gene for Purdue…chose Butler to have that great Fieldhouse as a home court! Played college ball for HOF coach Tony Hinkle. Butler team wins included Coach Hinkle’s 500th, win over #3 ranked Michigan and Cazzie Russell, highly ranked USC, Oklahoma…chosen for the Indiana College all-Star team in 1967 versus Coach Adolph Rupp, Kentucky (Louie Dampier). Coached at Clinton Central, Lafayette Harrison, Rensselaer Central. Member of the 1988 Hall of Fame Silver Anniversary team…publisher of Indiana High School Basketball Record Book (since 1983)… job placement director for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) since 1984…operates State Statistical Office (IBCA), editor of All-State Underclass Books for girls and boys, IBCA website coordinator…received the Virgil Sweet Distinguished Service Award from the IBCA in 2006.

In July of 2022 Gene was one of two inducted nationally into the NHSBCA (National HS Basketball Coaches Association) Court of Honor

Gene married Carolyn “Carrie” (Blue) in 1965 and they have two grown children. (Son Chris & Daughter Laura) Dr. Carolyn Milner has had a long educational career and she has been the Superintendent of Schools at several corporations over the years following her retirement from Supt. at Cloverdale Schools Corporation. Fraternity brothers Jeff and Mike Blue (From Bainbridge and Butler…great guys and great players) introduced Gene to Carrie, their cousin. Jeff Blue was Inducted into the HOF in 1999.
